RESEARCH

HARDWARE

At ISEY, we use a range of experimental hardware, including bespoke models, to capture precise, real-time data on children's interactions and responses.

Our equipment is used in research, consultancy, and industry collaborations, with all of our hardware receiving ethical approval from ethics boards in multiple countries.

CORE WEARBALE UNIT

These devices (worn over clothing in a harness on the chest), developed over more than a decade and successfully tested in over 10 trials with children aged 0-6 worldwide, are exclusively available through ISEY. Battery life/storage - 10 hours. Training time required for use in data collection: 1-2 hours. Includes: actigraph/movement sensor, microphone, proximity/position sensor*, GPS, torso camera (recording 1 still photo per second).

*Proximity/position sensor can either measure the child’s distance from another wearer of the device (i.e. a teacher) or produce a moving map of where each child is relative to other wearers of the device.

See our pages on measuring environments and measuring outcomes for more on how we use these data.

HEART RATE WEARABLE UNIT

These devices (worn under clothing with stickers) were specially designed by us and are only available through ISEY. Battery life/storage: 10 hours. Training time required for use in data collection: 1-2 hours. Measures: heart rate, respiratory sinus arrhythmia - a measure of short-term physiological stress

Medical electrodes with a labeled plastic case in the center.

HEAD CAMERAS

Worn in harnesses on the head. Uses commercially available cameras, with harnesses and data analyses by ISEY. Battery life/storage: 3-8 hours (depending on camera). Training time required for use in data collection: 2 hours. Measures: visual content of what a child sees and child attention.

See our pages on measuring environments and measuring outcomes for more on how we use these data.

NEUROIMAGING (EEG)

These devices either use a wireless version for outside, or a wired version for inside. Use commercially available hardware, with implementation and analysis expertise by ISEY. Battery life/storage (for wireless version): 9 hours. Training time required for use in data collection: 3-4 days. Measures: child attention/engagement and group coordination/synchrony.

See our pages on measuring environments and measuring outcomes for more on how we use these data.

In addition, for consultancy projects we also offer the following additional measures:

SALIVARY CORTISOL

Using commercially available hardware, with implementation and analysis expertise by ISEY. Training time required for use in data collection: 2 hours. Additional requirements: refrigeration/freezing for storage of data samples collected. Measures: salivary cortisol — a slow-moving cumulative measure of stress levels over days/weeks.

Saliva collection aid packaging and a small labeled vial with a green cap, used for collecting and storing saliva samples.

SLEEP TRACKER

Using commercially available hardware, with implementation and analysis expertise from ISEY. Battery life/storage: >1 week. Training time required for use in data collection: 10 mins. Measures: sleep timing and sleep quality
